Financial Management Training

for Arts Organizations

The South Carolina Arts Alliance is proud to partner with BDO Nonprofit and Education Practice, with support from the South Carolina Arts Commission and Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation to offer a series of financial management trainings to help strengthen the operations of arts organizations throughout South Carolina.

Arts grantees of either the SCAC or the GDDF are invited to attend, free of charge. Details about each workshop are below.

Trainings are designed for anyone who is new to nonprofit financial management or anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge. Arts leaders, bookkeepers, or anyone involved in the financial matters of your organization are encouraged to register, but please only one individual per organization.

Includes one full day of training with an optional one-on-one coaching session on the second day. These 1-hour coaching sessions have limited availability, and will fill on a first come, first served basis.

Breakfast and lunch will be included on the workshop day.

Understanding Financial Health

Location: Columbia, SC

April 119AM to 3PM – Workshop (Breakfast and Lunch Provided)
April 129AM to 4:30PM – Optional Coaching Sessions (only 5 slots available)

This workshop will help participants better understand their organization’s financial health and financial trends by exploring audited financial statements and the IRS Form 990 and introducing key metrics of financial health.

Key concepts include:

  • Understanding GAAP financial statements and communicating financial results to relevant stakeholders.
  • The importance of net asset composition, liquidity, and leverage.
  • How to calculate key financial metrics.

Budgeting + True Cost

October 17 – Workshop (Breakfast and Lunch Provided)
October 18 – Optional Coaching Sessions (only 5 slots available)

A viable financial management strategy needs to address a vision for the future, incorporate an understanding of the past, and present financial position of the organization. This workshop will help participants develop a budget process that facilitates programmatic, strategic, and fiscal discussions among the leadership team, resulting in a mission-driven budget.

Key concepts include:

  • Types of budgets and levels of planning at an organization.
  • Implementing a comprehensive and inclusive financial planning process.
  • Identifying, allocating, and building indirect costs into program budgets to understand the real cost of program delivery.
