One special election was held to replace the seat formerly held by John Courson.

  • All 124 seats were up in 2018.
  • A majority of seats (68) were uncontested with one candidate.
  • Sixteen (16) new individuals were elected, of those seven (7) ran unopposed.
  • Three (3) districts flipped – Democrats picked up two (2) seats, Republicans picked up one (1).

Amendments

Amendment #1: To change the selection of the State Superintendent of Education from an elected position to an appointed position.

Result: 58.4% -> NO (remains elected)

 


Voter Turnout

This years midterm elections brought out significantly more voters in South Carolina than the previous midterm, and approached numbers from the 2016 Presidential election.

2014 Total Votes: 1,246,301 million
2018 Total Votes: 1,681,813 million
Difference: +435,512

Republican Votes: +215,400
Democratic Votes: +253,002
*Total increases greater than difference in vote due to third party votes in 2014

2016 Presidential Election Total Votes: 2,103,027
