COVID-19 has dominated our lives since mid-March, but don’t forget that 2020 is also an election year. Everyone knows that it is a presidential election year, but did you know that every seat in the SC Legislature is also up this year? Not to mention a bunch of Sheriff races, County Council races, and some contenders in the Congressional races across the state.

June 9 is this state’s primary for all non-presidential races. Mark your calendars. Find the full list of those running for election here (select “State Senate” or “State House of Representatives” for state races).

The SCAA typically dives into candidate profiles and tracking after the primary is over, but there are some important updates around voting in this year’s primary that everyone should be aware of.

  1. June 9 IS the primary. South Carolina is not delaying the June 9th primary due to COVID-19, it is going on as scheduled.
  2. Absentee is voting is open to EVERYONE. During their brief stint back at the Statehouse in May, the Legislature passed a bill creating another valid reason for obtaining an absentee ballot – State of Emergency. If you are uncomfortable voting in-person due to coronavirus, you can still vote absentee and have your voice heard. So, there’s no excuse not to vote this year. [Click Here for Info >>]
  3. Special Elections to be held July 14. Many special elections for local races were postponed over the last few months. Those are now on the books for July 14. Local races are extremely important, so be sure to mark your calendar if there is an election in your community. [Click Here for List]
