The South Carolina Arts Alliance Board of Directors announces the appointment of a new board member, continuing its commitment to statewide representation in it’s organizational leadership.
At its May 8th meeting, the South Carolina Arts Alliance Board of Directors unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Bex Ferrell. Dr. Ferrell’s three year term began on July 1, and you can learn more about her below.
The Board of Directors also bids a fond farewell Clara Heinsohn, who joined the board in 2009, and Chris Burgess, who joined the board in 2020. Please help us thank both of these board members for their many years of service to the SCAA!

Rebecca Ferrell, Ph.D

Dr. Rebecca (Bex) Ferrell is a dance advocate, artist, educator, consultant, and researcher. She holds a BFA in Dance and Choreography from Virginia Commonwealth University, an MFA in Dance from Arizona State University, and a PhD in Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky, the first program of its kind in the United States.
Their research interests focus on cultural policy, the creative workforce, and sustainable labor practices in dance. Rebecca is currently an Assistant Professor of Arts Management at the College of Charleston, where they serve as Chair of the Faculty Welfare Committee and a member of the Faculty Advisory Council to the President.
She has served on advisory and grant panels throughout the US, including the National Endowment for the Arts, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, United States Artists, the Arts Education Partnership Council, and Virginians for the Arts, where they were a member of the Legislative Committee. Rebecca has held academic positions at American University, Arizona State University, Shenandoah Conservatory, University of Illinois, and Virginia Commonwealth University. Their previous professional positions include Director and Curator of the Flatlands Dance Film Festival, Executive Director of Dance Metro DC, and Director of Programs for Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance.
