The SC Arts Alliance Board of Directors is proud to announce that South Carolina Superintendent of Education, Molly Spearman, will be the recipient of the organization’s coveted Scottie Award. The Award will be presented AT A DATE TBA.
The Scottie Award recognizes individuals who have made long-lasting impacts on the arts industry in South Carolina and is awarded at the discretion of the SCAA’s board of directors – it is not an annual award.
As a former music teacher, Superintendent Spearman has continued her support for the arts throughout her career in education. Most recently, Superintendent Spearman announced the largest investment in arts education for South Carolina – a three-year, $20 million partnership with the SC Arts Commission through the use of the SC Department of Education’s ESSER III funding. The partnership, named Arts Grow SC, will strengthen after-school and summer learning opportunities in the arts, build upon successful programs in arts integration, support community partnerships in arts education, and fund research on program activities.
The Scottie Award is named in honor of Scott Shanklin-Peterson, long-serving board member of the SCAA, former director of the SC Arts Commission, former Deputy Director of the National Endowment for the Arts, and the founding director of the Arts Management program at College of Charleston.
