Board Management Training

The South Carolina Arts Alliance is proud to partner with Solutions By Shawn Edwards, with support from the South Carolina Arts Commission and Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation to offer a series of  trainings to help South Carolina arts organizations improve the management, governance, and engagement of boards of directors.

Workshops are offered free of charge, but Arts grantees of either the SCAC or the GDDF will be granted priority registration. Details about each workshop are below.

Trainings are designed for anyone who is new to nonprofit arts management or anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge. Arts organization staff and board members are encouraged to register, but please only one individual per organization.

Includes one full day of training with an optional one-on-one coaching session. These 1-hour coaching sessions have limited availability, and will fill on a first come, first served basis.

Breakfast and lunch will be included on the workshop day.

Board Engagement and Cultivation

October 16 – Optional Coaching Sessions (only 5 slots, 1 hour available)

During this session, participants will explore the “who” and the “what” of nonprofit board leadership; through discovery of the different types of boards, their function, and the level of engagement expected from each board type.

Participants will also explore research supported recruitment methods to cultivate the board members they desire, with an emphasis on board culture and retention.

Participants will engage in small group discussions with prompts to reinforce the learning, and will leave the training with resources to apply within their organizations.

During this session, participants will explore the “how” and the “why” of nonprofit board leadership. Time will be spent understanding governing documents, their components, and how they should be used in organizations.

Management of a nonprofit board will be discussed from a practical perspective to ensure participants understand why the steps taken to manage a board are important. Additionally, we will explore the relationship between the Executive Director, the Board Chair, and the remaining staff.

Participants will have an opportunity to discuss an engaging case study to enhance application of the topics.
